EDLC are increasingly becoming one of the main elements of automotive electronic systems. The ultracapacitor for the car solves the problem of starting the engine, thereby reducing the load on the battery. In addition, due to the optimization of wiring diagrams, the mass of the vehicle is reduced. Widespread use of EDLC for cars found in the manufacture of hybrid cars. Their generator operation depends on the internal combustion engine, and the machine is driven by electric motors. An EDLC for a car in such a circuit is a source of quickly received energy at the beginning of movement and acceleration. During braking, the drive is charging.
Now the ultra-capacitor instead of the battery is only partially used. However, in the near future, a complete replacement is likely to become real, since scientists are actively developing such technologies.
When is an EDLC needed to start the engine?
An ultracapacitor for a car is required when there is a risk that a standard battery cannot cope with the task of starting an internal combustion engine. For example, an EDLC for a car helps in the following situations:
- the battery is chronically undercharged in conditions of frequent trips over short distances;
- battery power is not enough to start the engine. Most often, this problem arises in the winter;
- it is necessary to reduce the peak load on the battery to extend its life.
Even when the battery is completely out of order, some use an EDLC instead of a battery. It solves the problem of starting the engine, and in the future the on-board network is powered mainly from the generator. Meanwhile, a ultracapacitor instead of a battery is recommended to be used only in emergency mode, until it becomes possible to install a new battery. In a normal situation, the EDLC for starting the engine is used in the following format. It is connected in parallel with the battery and at the time of start-up takes on the main load. A braked starter can consume a very large current (hundreds of amperes).
